Located in the most beautiful harbour in Europe, Toulon was a favourite
subject for artists. Painting dominated the artistic life of Toulon at the end
of the XIXth century, and the landscape remains its best expression.
A pivotal figure, Vincent Cordouan is recognised as the leader of the
Provencal School and his studio as the meeting-place for the entire art world
of Toulon. The young generation of the Fine Arts School, founded in 1873,
looked towards impressionism, with Montenard, Dauphin, Gallian… Nardi and
Nattero confirmed this trend, followed later by Signac, who gave his
pointillist view of the site.
